Research Interests:
Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, Operator Theory, Ergodic Theory, Differential Geometry, Number Theory

I am interested in Spectral Theory of Partial Differential Equations, Ergodic Theory and Analytic Number Theory, and in the connections between these areas. I currently have two PhD students, Mayumi Sakata, working in connections between generalized eigenfunction expansions and analytic number theory, and Zhang Hong-Kun, beginning work in connections between spectral theory and ergodic theory. Mayumi graduates this summer (2001); she developed (with me) a new and much simpler approach to the operator algebraic theory of generalized eigenfunction expansions, as well as some concrete applications to expansions which arise in studying the Laplacian on fundamental domains for congruence subgroups of the modular group.
