Academics, Work, and Other Hobbies

I am currently scheduled to graduate with my PhD in Applied Math in May, 2003. My main research area is dynamical systems and topology though I am also interested in continuum theory. I came to UAB in '96, received my BS in Mathematics in '99, and my Masters in Mathematics in 2000. My PhD dissertation is entitled Parameterization of Rotational Sets Under zd. You may view an abstract by following the link in the Professional Links list to the right.

Besides mathematics I enjoy learning about the sciences. My BS minor is in Chemistry and my PhD minor is Computer Science. This was a natural choice for me as I enjoy implementing mathematical logic into programming (though one could argue programming was all mathematical logic). I also thoroughly enjoy learning about history. You can view some pictures I took at the Tower of London over Christmas via a link in the Other Links list.

My current work project, GK-12, involves interacting with a group of middle school students and their teacher, Ms. Susan Clopton. The purpose of this branch of the GK-12 grant is to introduce, and study the effects of, the use modeling and visualization techniques in order to covey concepts and ideas. The larger goal of the Gk-12 program is to bring university level scientific research into the k-12 realm in some form. If you are interested in learning more you may visit our branch of the grant's main GK-12 website at the University of Illinois at Champaign (UIUC) or My GK-12 website.

Playing sports and games, especially soccer, is a passion of mine. I play for Intergraph B team in the Huntsville Adult Soccer League. We used to be the majority of the Intergraph A team but a bunch of the guys (including my dad) got old and decided that their lack of pace, um, I mean style of play would be better suited to the B-league. For the sake of camaraderie I joined them. The problem of this strategy is that every other year we seem to win the B-league and end up playing in the A-league anyway! I am a staunch Celtic Football Club fan, and would one day love to attend an Old Firm Derby at Parkhead.

So, if you are interested in mathematics and would like to know what it is like from a student's viewpoint, or if you would just like to rejoice in Celtic's most recent victory, please e-mail me at malaugh@math.uab.edu.
