    Riemann Surfaces and 3-Regular Graphs
11:25 AM in Room CH 458

Abstract: (joint work with Eran Makover) What does a typical surface of constant curvature look like geometrically? We study this question by modeling it on the geometric behavior of a randomly chosen 3-regular graph. The resulting picture is an interesting mix of techniques from Riemannian geometry, complex analysis, and probability theory, and contains some surprising answers.

Harmonic maps and minimal surfaces in singular geometry
11:25 AM in Room CH 458

Abstract: Harmonic maps into singular targets has attracted the attention of many researchers. Recent developments extend much of the existing harmonic map theory to singlar target spaces for which the curvature is bounded from above in the sense of triangle comparison hypothesis. In this talk, we will summarize our investigation; in particular, we consider minimal surface theory as an extention of the harmonic map theory in this general setting. Second, as an application of these generalized harmonic maps and minimal surfaces, we will outline a completion of the Gerstenhaber-Rauch program of constructing the Teichmuller map between two compact Riemann surfaces.
