Hello World! I am Mandar Kulkarni and I am a PhD Candidate in Applied Mathematics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). I am working with Prof. Ian Knowles on Inverse Problems. My research entails development of a computational technique, based on variational principles, for imaging the ocean’s interior from reflection seismology experiments data. Mathematically, this amounts to reconstruction of the coefficient functions in the acoustic wave equation, from knowledge of the Dirichlet to Neumann map on partial boundary of the domain. Our goal is to numerically reconstruct the solution and investigate the uniqueness of the reconstruction.

Prior to this I have worked with Prof. Tom Jannett of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UAB for my Masters' degree. The problem I worked on for my Master's thesis was to develop a controller that would use the aerodynamics of an air-to-air missile to turn it through 180 degrees in minimum time. We developed a single neural network controller that accomplished the said objective.

I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Pune, India while studying at P.V.G's College of Engineering & Technology.
