Summer Courses

Each Summer, starting in June,  GBMP offers specialized 2-week math content courses to local teachers from participating school districts. The courses are designed to prepare teachers to offer mathematics instruction that enables all students to learn significant mathematics with depth and understanding. Sessions for the Summer of 2008 concluded July 18th and included:

Patterns, The Foundations for Algebraic Reasoning (Prerequisite for other courses)

Probability

Numerical Reasoning

Geometry and Proportional Reasoning

Registration:  To register for a GBMP Summer Course, teachers must complete a registration form, have the form approved and signed by their school administrator, and then submitted to the appropriate school district liaison who should forward it to GBMP staff.  Registrations forms should not be submitted by teachers to GBMP staff directly. Please check back here in the Fall for the registration form to use and more information on GBMP Summer Courses for 2009.

Location:  GBMP Summer Courses have always been held at a school in one of our participating school districts.  The location for the 2009 GBMP Summer Courses will be posted here later this Fall.

Duration: Each course runs for 9 days over a period of 2 consecutive weeks. Classes are held Tuesday-Friday during week 1 and Monday-Friday during week 2.  A half-day pre-session orientation for grade 5-12 teachers only is held on the Monday prior to the beginning of each “Patterns, The Foundations for Algebraic Reasoning” course. There are no orientation sessions prior to the other courses or for teachers of other grades.

Get College Credits for Summer Courses!  GBMP is pleased to announce that UAB offers undergraduate and graduate level Mathematics credits for GBMP summer courses.  Graduate level Education credits are also available.  Updated procedures for applying for UAB credits for 2008 GBMP courses will be posted here as we approach the summer.  Please pay close attention to the application and enrollment deadlines.

College Credit for MEC courses is also available from other universities. For further information, please contact Jennifer Stoves at 934-3738.

FREE Kits of Materials and Teaching Units!  Fifth Grade, Middle School, High School and Pre-Service teachers who take GBMP summer courses receive free, course-specific kits of mathematics manipulatives as well as a set of teaching units specific to their grade level.  A different kit is given for each course. These resources are provided for professional development purposes during the course and so that teachers have the materials they need to put what they have learned to immediate use in the classroom.

Grade Level Sessions

GBMP holds one-day Grade Level Sessions for teachers in grades K–8 in each of the fall and spring semesters during the school year.  These professional development days serve as a follow-up for teachers who have participated in GBMP's summer courses.  For those teachers who have never participated in GBMP activities before, the sessions serve as an introduction to the project's work, as we share new ways to help children become accurate, efficient, and flexible in their thinking about numbers. Separate sessions are held for teachers in grades: K-1, 2-3, 4-5 and 6-8.  They are led by teachers from local school districts. All Grade Level Sessions for 2008-2009 will be held at the Mountain Brook Board of Education located at 32 Vine Street, Mountain Brook, AL 35213 (MBBOE Map) and are day-long trainings, running from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm.  GBMP 2008-2009 Grade Level Sessions are scheduled as follows:

 SESSION DATE

 TEACHER'S GRADE TAUGHT

Sept. 26, 2008 6-8
Oct. 6, 2008 K-1
Oct. 7, 2008 2-3

ALL TEACHERS IN THE 9 GBMP PARTNER DISTRICTS ARE WELCOME.  Grade Level Sessions feature Number TalksA Number Talk is an instructional strategy that teachers can use in their classrooms.  Number Talks focus on developing numerical reasoning with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percent, and on the arithmetic properties underlying diverse computational procedures and algorithms.   To attend a session,  please contact GBMP Project Assistant Jennifer Stoves at 934-3738.

Mathematics Support Team Teacher Sessions

The schedule for Math Support Team Teacher (MST) sessions has now been set for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009.  For the first MST Cohort (MST 1), sessions are scheduled for Sept. 22nd and 23rd, Nov. 3rd and 4th, and Jan. 12th and 13th (2009).   For MST Cohort '07, sessions have been scheduled for Sept. 24th and 25th, Dec. 8th and 9th, and Feb. 2nd and 3rd (2009).   All sessions will be held at the Mountain Brook Board of Education located at 32 Vine Street, Mountain Brook, AL 35213 (MBBOE Map) and are day-long trainings, running from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm.  If you have questions about our MST sessions, please contact GBMP Project Assistant Jennifer Stoves at 934-3738.

Engineering Tasks

Mathematics students often ask "Why do we need to know this stuff?"  Working along with the Education Department, UAB Engineering Department faculty are creating engineering tasks that show practical applications of mathematics so that teachers and students can connect mathematics to the "real" world.  You can find these tasks and other resources at the GBMP Engineering Task Website.
